iU establishes a regional revitalization agreement with Kyotango City

[Tuesday, August 24, 2020] President Ichiya Nakamura of the Professional University of Information and Management for Innovation (“iU”), Sumida ward, Tokyo (http://www.i-u.ac.jp ") established a regional revitalization agreement with Mayor Yasushi Nakayama of Kyotango city, Kyoto Prefecture (https: //www.city.kyotango.lg.jp/). The signing ceremony for the regional revitalization agreement was inaugurated on July 29, 2020.

The agreement lays the foundation to provide iU educational content for promoting ICT education, which Kyotango City promotes, and jointly implement an industry activation project for Kyotango City with support from iU faculty and students.

Kyotango City Background
Kyotango City is located in the northernmost part of Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. In April 2004, six towns: Kumihama Town, Amino Town, Tango Town, Mineyama Town, Yasaka Town, and Omiya Town were merged to create Kyotango. UNESCO Global Geopark certified the silk fabric traditional industries along the coastline, the climate of Sanin Kaigan Geopark, and registered the area as Japanese heritage describing it as "Tango Chirimen Corridor woven by threads that have spun 300 years."

It is also the "hometown of industry" for the rich history of rice cultivation, originating from the former Ise, as well as the oldest steelmaking ruins. It is a tourist destination that many guests visit each year in search for places of wonder and seasonal foods. Kyotango city offers a beautiful coastline like Kotobiki beach, famous for the national natural monument "Singing sand", the largest number of hot springs in Kyoto Prefecture, the "Taizagani" Matsuba brand crab, fruits, sake, and much more.

Kyotango City has been set as a priority “Future Human Capital Resources Development Project” and is one of the directions the city is aiming for in the future. We strive to develop human capital resources who will cultivate the future, support the dreams, aspirations, and future of children. We are proactively working to promote education that incorporates these efforts and support the challenges faced by youth.

Regional Revitalization Agreement Background
This agreement’s aim is to revitalize Kyotango City industry by promoting ICT education, and building connections between iU students, faculty and staff.
The iU collaborative projects will provide educational content for the purpose of improving the quality of ICT education in Kyotango City. Mayor Nakayama, is a "Super Visiting Lecturer" for iU and will provide remote lectures for iU students for the joint projects in the field of Kyotango city.

Emphasis of iU student education is on developing necessary skills to create new ideas to further expand Kyotango city, the residents of Kyotango city, and for the benefit of society. These efforts are to realize and assist with the challenges which smaller local cities face.

Comment from Yasushi Nakayama, Mayer of Tango City
“The conclusion of this agreement is extremely significant in considering future town development and regional revitalization. By incorporating ICT with various local industries, education, welfare, and the natural environment we seek to discover the hidden potential of Kyotango city and the origins of Japanese industry. We feel the significance of time, to create future industrial creation. This Agreement will bring enormous potential into reality and become a powerful engine for future innovation.”
